The medieval castle of Kaltenštejn from the perspective of non-destructive archaeology

Guided tour organized as part of the European Days of Archaeology

On Saturday, 15 June 2024, the traditional guided tour of the ruins of the medieval castle Kaltenštejn took place as part of the European Days of Archaeology. The guided tour was organized by the Department of Archaeology of the Silesian Museum (SZM) together with the Museum of Jeseniky Region (VMJ). This year, a total of fifty visitors (and three dogs J ) came. At the Radost guesthouse, which is located below the ruins, the head of the Archaeology Department, Dr. Jiří Juchelka, presented the technique used in the non-destructive survey of the castle. On the way up to the castle there was a lecture about the history of the place directed by Mgr. Milan Rychlý, archaeologist of the VMJ. At six stations, visitors were then introduced to the different types of finds that were obtained at the castle during non-destructive archaeological research over the last four years. Above all, emphasis was placed on the context of the individual objects and their connection to the history of the site. At the end of the tour, visitors were gifted with a replica of a medieval arrowhead, which was scanned and printed on a 3D printer at the Department of Archaeology of the SZM.

We would like to thank all the visitors of the tour for their participation, patience and also physical performance during the climb up the castle hill and we look forward to seeing them again at SZM and VMJ events.
