Cvilín

The castle was built in the second quarter of the 13th century on the last spur of the Brantice Highlands at an altitude of 420 m, less than 3 km southeast of Krnov, to control an important path through the valley of the Opava River.

The core of the castle, almost rectangular in shape, is provided with a massive perimeter wall. It is flanked by a ditch with a flat bottom and an advanced circular rampart. The castle core was surrounded by a curtain on three sides.

In the southern corner of the courtyard of the central castle, there is a bergfrit – a cylindrical refuge tower with a diameter of up to 14 m. On the opposite side of the courtyard, there was the oldest castle palace. The longest residential building, probably a late-Gothic palace, lined the entire northeastern wall.

The castle was entered via a bridge supported by pillars.
