Michael I of Romania (1921–2017)
Michael I (of the House of Hohenzollern) was king twice, from 1927 to 1930, when the Regency Council ruled on his behalf, and from 1940 to 1947. In 1944, he had the pro-German dictator, Marshal Ion Antonescu, arrested. By then, Romanian troops were fighting alongside the German army on the Eastern Front. In September 1944, after the signing of the Armistice in Moscow, Romania switched sides in the war to the Allies. After World War II, however, the Communists came to power in Romania and Michael I was forced to abdicate on December 30, 1947, and go into exile in Great Britain, living in Switzerland from 1956. King Michael I has also been an honorary citizen of Kroměříž since 2011.
