Uprising in the Czech Lands

The Czech National Council, in cooperation with the government-in-exile, prepared a coordinated uprising in the Protectorate. From April 1945 onwards, there were spontaneous fighting actions by the inhabitants in the vicinity of the front, among others in the Ostrava and Frýdek regions. In Přerov on May 1, citizens disarmed the German garrison, but the uprising was suppressed. On May 5, an uprising led by the Czech National Council broke out in Prague. About 30 000 citizens took part in the fighting. Another 100 000 people helped to build barricades, treat the wounded, etc. 18 000 soldiers of General Andrei Vlasov's Russian Liberation Army also took part in the clashes on the side of the rebels. The fighting lasted until the morning of May 9, when Red Army units arrived in Prague.
